The New Haven EP-5 Electric No. 2350 was Lionel’s initial issue of this type of engine in 1956. It would be available through 1958. This engine featured twin operating pantographs and magnetic operating couplers, a three position directional unit that controls a single vertical worm drive motor, operating horn, and Magnetraction. The overhead pantographs could be wired to power this engine.
Produced on a BLACK body, it would be painted ORANGE and WHITE with heat-stamped lettering. Reproduction shells use a silk screen process. Early issues were painted on the nose. But Lionel had a problem with applying this paint in a consistent manner and did away with this during the first year of production by creating a decal to fit over the ends of this engine. It is very hard today to find this engine with the original nose decals intact and many have been replaced by reproductions. A growing problem in the aging of these units is the stress placed on the ends that mount to the chassis. This, and tension induced by the insertion of the oversized headlight lens has caused cracks in the ends that tend to be covered up by the nose decals. There are seven variations: |
