The Lionel Lines Livingston Pullman Car No. 2429 was first cataloged in 1952, as such, it does not match the other cars in the No. 2421 Series and is the most difficult car of this series to find. Documented examples have been found with the GRAY painted roof and BLACK stripes and window outlines indicating that Lionel produced this car in 1951. It is believed that these bodies were later sold as replacements by service stations.
This car was based on the standard Pullman prototype of the time and is lighted by two lamps that are held in place by metal brackets that are also used to hold the roof to the body. There are people silhouettes on the interior window inserts. It came with Type IV die-cast four-wheel passenger trucks equipped with electronic coil couplers. There are two variations:
Variation A: GRAY roof with BLACK stripes and window trim and BLACK heat-stamped lettering. This variation’s body was available as a replacement shell in 1951.
Variation B: SILVER roof with BLACK heat-stamped lettering and no BLACK stripes or window trim. Available in 1952 and 1953.
Issued in O27 Gauge sets, this car will operate equally well on Lionel’s wider radius O Gauge track. Note: Collectors would be advised to check the alignment of the roof. Many of these early 2400 Series cars have the roof installed backwards at the Lionel factory. This places undue stress on the metal brackets that hold the roof in place. The rain shield end of the roof should be above the end of the car that has the doors. |
