The Lionel Santa Fe NW-2 Switcher No. 622 was used as a test vehicle for Magnetraction in 1949. The 1949 catalog shows this diesel with the name "LIONEL" printed on the sides, and in 1950 the consumer catalog shows it with "NEW YORK CENTRAL" markings, but it was never issued this way. This engine always has a painted BLACK body with WHITE heat-stamped lettering "A.T. & S.F." on the sides with a "Santa Fe" decal.
This NW-2 switcher came equipped with a three position directional unit whose control lever was adjustable from the bottom of the BLACK painted die-cast chassis that has wire handrail details attached. This diesel has an operating bell. In addition, it came with a BLACK ornamental bell and radio wheel, a SILVER ornamental horn, interior lighting at both ends, and electronic couplers.
This engine was an excellent runner. Due to the fact that the 1949 issue would often loose its Magnetraction, Lionel in 1950 would redesign the engine and place the magnets directly on the truck frames.
There are two different shades of Santa Fe decals and two different sizes of GM decals. Some of the early issues have the number "622" heat-stamped on the lower portion of the front of this switcher. This allowed for many different combinations that could occur, however, we’ve indicated only the three major variations below: |
