Flat Car No. 6401 was issued in 1965 with no load. Not pictured in this year’s catalog, it would only be listed at the bottom of page 14 where it says, "No. 6401 Flat Car — perfect for carrying cars, crates and accessories." There is no number or printing of any kind on the side of this flat car.
Produced on a GRAY No. 1877-3 chassis, this car is undecorated and without the truss bars, and it has been found with both AAR, and arch-bar trucks. The AAR trucks on this car usually are found with one operating disc coupler, but those that came with arch-bar trucks have solid non-operating couplers. Lionel created a special box to house this car for separate sale. A very difficult car to find in the original box.
The No. 958-75 OLIVE DRAB tank load shown above was manufactured by Payton Products in the 1960’s and came with this flat car in some uncataloged military sets, most notably Sears outfit No. 9820. |
