Lionel Trains Gondola No. 1002 Variation A

Lionel Trains Small Gondola CarsThe Lionel Gondola Car No. 1002 was included in the Scout Sets between 1948 and 1952. Produced on an unpainted plastic body that was lettered in WHITE "LIONEL" along with the number, this car has early and late scout trucks but no brake wheels.

In 1950, Lionel produced a series of these gondolas for the purpose of demonstrating the virtues of Magnetraction and distributed them to dealers throughout the country. Fourteen of these cars were sent to each dealer, and these cars were pulled by a No. 2035 or a No. 2036 locomotive, and they came in the following colors: RED with WHITE letters, SILVER with BLACK lettering, and YELLOW with BLACK lettering. These cars all had late scout trucks with magnetic couplers. After the holiday season many of these dealers sold these cars. These variations, are today, difficult to locate. There are five variations:

Variation A: BLUE unpainted plastic with WHITE lettering and early scout trucks.
Variation B: BLACK unpainted plastic with WHITE lettering and early scout trucks.
Variation C: RED painted plastic with WHITE lettering and late scout trucks.
Variation D: SILVER painted plastic with BLACK lettering and late scout trucks.
