The Horse Flat Car No. 1877 came with The General Set that was available from 1959 until 1962.
This car had an unpainted BROWN truss rod chassis that was heat-stamped in YELLOW sans-serif lettering "1877" to the left, and "BUILT BY LIONEL" to the right.
Depending on the set in which this car was a component, it can be found with two operating disc couplers, or one disc and one solid non-operating coupler, or with both couplers being solid non-operating. All cars have AAR trucks with the exception of those that have non-operating couplers. These cars are found with arch-bar trucks.
There are two MAROON colored long sections of fencing that hold eight cross section dividers that separated the eight PLASTICVILLE horses that usually consisted of two each of WHITE, TAN, RED BROWN, and BLACK horses. The fence sections and the horses have been reproduced. The original horses have a "BB" stamp on the bottom. The WHITE horses are believed to have been produced exclusively for Lionel by Bachmann Bros. This accounts for their scarcity today.
This car was available for separate sale and was housed in an ORANGE perforated picture box.
