The Lionel Adriatic Type 2-6-4-Locomotive No. 2037-500 would head up the "Girl’s Set" in 1957 and 1958. Lionel thought this set would be a big hit with the girls and they were drastically mistaken. The set did not sell, and in a desperate attempt to sell at least the engine portion of these sets many dealers repainted this locomotive BLACK. All of this combined to make one of the most sought after collectibles of the post-war period.

This locomotive was equipped with Magnetraction, a smoke unit, and a three position directional unit whose control lever protrudes from the top of the boiler right in front of the cab. It did not have the side connecting valve rods, and the number "2037-500" does not appear on the cab. It came with a No. 1130T streamlined tender with bar-end trucks and one tabbed coupler in a box that was numbered "1130T-500" on the end flaps.

There are two variations:

Variation A: Heat-stamped number on cab.

Variation B: Rubber-stamped number on cab.

Credible forgeries exist of this locomotive, so the collector should be cautious when purchasing this engine.
