Lionel Trains FA A Unit DieselThe Lionel Rock Island FA A Unit No. 231 was produced from 1961 until 1963 on a sheet metal frame that had solid non-operating couplers. This diesel has a two-position directional unit whose control lever is adjustable from the top, and two axle Magnetraction, an interior light, but no horn. Open pilot body mold with a large lower ledge.

The body of this Alco unit was painted BLACK with WHITE heat-stamped lettering. The RED stripe on Variation A is sometimes found in faded condition caused by exposure to direct sun light. This color change is visible in the side view illustrated below when compared to the BRIGHT RED of the front view.

There are two variations:

Variation A: Has a painted RED stripe across the middle with a smaller WHITE stripe at the roof line and heat-stamped lettering.

Has a Type IIA motor. Made in 1961-1962.

Variation B: Has a BLACK painted body, but no RED stripe. The painted WHITE roof stripe remains on this variation, as does the heat-stamped lettering. Uses a Type IIC motor. 1963 Production.

This diesel engine was issued in O27 sets that included O27 Gauge track, but it will run equally well on O Gauge track.
