Sunoco 2-Dome Tank Car No. 2465 Variation D

Lionel 2-Dome Tank CarsThe Sunoco Two-Dome Tank Car No. 2465 was the first issue of this car in 1946. It would be available until 1948. Mounted on a sheet metal Type 1 frame with steps, the first issues would have decals, on the left the "SUNOCO" diamond logo, and technical data on the right side. Cars whose decals have not discolored with age are highly valued today. Later issues would have these markings applied with a rubber-stamp. Equipped with staple-end trucks that have electronic coil couplers. There are four variations:

Variation A: Sunoco decal with "GAS" and "OILS" inside the YELLOW diamond logo. This is the first issue of this car in 1946. Forgeries exist of this rare variation. Most of the time they are derived from the rubber-stamped Variation D by removing the lettering and applying reproduction decals. Reproduction decals do not have the "GAS" and "OILS" within the diamond logo.

Variation B: The Sunoco decal has a small "SUNOCO" this is inside of the diamond and eight lines of technical data on the decal on the right side of the car.

Variation C: The Sunoco decal has a large "SUNOCO" that extends beyond the diamond and six lines of technical data on the decal on the right side of the car.

Variation D: A rubber-stamp is used to apply the markings to this variation. "SUNOCO" extends beyond the borders of the diamond. Technical data is DARK BLUE in color.
