The Lionel Santa Fe No. 622 Switcher was used as a test vehicle for Magnetraction in 1949. The 1949 catalog shows this diesel with the name "LIONEL" printed on the sides, but it was never issued this way. This engine always had a BLACK body with WHITE lettering "A.T. & S.F." on the sides with a "Santa Fe" decal. Equipped with a three position directional unit whose control lever was adjustable from the bottom of the die-cast frame, a bell, interior lighting at both ends, and electronic couplers, this engine was an excellent runner. Due to the fact that the 1949 issue would often loose its Magnetraction, Lionel in 1950 would redesign the engine and place the magnets directly on the powered axles. There are two variations:

Variation A: Large GM decal on cab (1949).

Variation B: Small GM decal on the lower front of the body (1950).

Lionel issued this diesel for use on O gauge track, but it will also operate on the smaller radius curves of O27 gauge track. Similar to the No. 6220 except for the number change.
