The Yard Light No. 70 is one of the more elusive of the Post War Accessories. Available for only three years, 1948 and 1950, it is made entirely out of metal with a chrome post and a round BLACK bakelite base that had two binding posts for the electrical wires. Because of the nature of bakelite this light is often found with cracks in the base. Originally, it came with a No. L363 bulb, and it would light from either accessory voltage, or track current with the use of a CTC Lockon.
This light was originally used as part of the earliest version of the No. 397 Coal Loader. While the Coal Loader was late into production in 1948 (the first known Instruction Sheet is dated 12-48), the Yard Light was available earlier this year and is shown in the 1948 Catalog as being RED in color, but it was only produce in BLACK. When Lionel stopped putting this light on this loader in mid-1948 they continued to offer it for separate sale until 1950.
Although this yard light was only available for three years the lamp heads would later be used on the No. 395 Floodlight Tower and the No. 410 Billboard Blinker whose production continued until 1958. There are no variations.
Dimensions: 1-1/8 inch base, 5-1/4 inches high.
