The Lamp Assortment No. 123 was available from 1948 until 1952. Contained within the issue for 1948 were an assortment of 60 different lamps.

In 1949 Lionel removed the large lamp post bulbs No. 39-3 and No. 40-3. This allowed for the inclusion of 66 lamps in this assortment. Both of these assortments came in a plain RED lift-top box.

In 1950 Lionel would insert a hard board paper insert that held 60 lamps. This was similar to what is found on the No. 123 Lamp Assortment. In addition the box number was displayed on the box top as is seen in the picture to the right.

There are three variations listed below, but all variations of this Lamp Assortment have an application guide printed on the inside of the box top. These charts can be used to calculate the year of release. We only know of three different sets at this time, but they could have changed for every year of production. Variation A: Contains 60 individually boxed lamps in a plain RED box. 1949 Production.

Variation B: Contains 66 individually boxed lamps in a plain RED box. 1949 Production.

Variation C: The quantity of lamps was reduced to 60 that were pushed into a hard paper board and the No. 122 was shown on the top of the box. 1950-52 Production.
