Automobile Flat Car No. 6406 Variation B

Lionel Trains Trailer Flat Car No. 6405Automobile Flat Car No. 6406 has a complex history and is one of those cars that are easily overlooked by collectors. Shown only in the advanced catalog of 1961, this car uses flat car truss bar mold 1877-3, and was produced in GRAY or MAROON. It was equipped with either AAR or Arch-bar trucks that have solid non–operating couplers. The Lionel Service Manual lists this car as No. 6406 that designated this car that has no number or lettering printed on the sides whose load was either a RED, YELLOW, or BROWN automobile.

In the 1961 advance catalog this car is pictured bearing the number 6404, but no examples have ever been found with this number printed on the car sides. There are three variations:

Variation A: is a MAROON flat car with a RED auto that has GRAY bumpers and clear windows. Came as part of Set No. 1123 "The Peacemaker" as illustrated in the 1961 advanced catalog.

Variation B: is a MAROON flat car with YELLOW auto with clear windows and GRAY bumpers. This car was part of set No. X-600 made for the Quaker Oats Company on a promotional basis in 1961.

Variation C: is a GRAY flat car that came with either a YELLOW or BROWN automobile. This car was part of the Van Camp set No. 19142 that also included the No. 638-2361 Van Camp’s box car, the No. 3309 Turbo Missile Launching car that had the missile storage rack, and was headed up by a No. 242 Locomotive. Issued in 1962.
