The Derrick Car No. 6670 was a cut down version of the No. 6660 and was available in 1959 and 1960. The derrick was not attached to a stamped steel metal base. Instead the derrick was directly riveted to the flat car chassis. Also, gone were the stabilizing outriggers that came with the No. 6660. Despite this, the derrick car still offered a lot of play value. Which is why this car is hard to find today without the derrick rivet loosened where it is attached to the chassis of the car. This car was equipped with AAR trucks that are riveted to the chassis and both trucks have disc couplers.

In 1958, when Lionel started using their new AAR plastic trucks they moved the car number to the left of the "LIONEL" inscription on the sides of these cars. In what is believed to be a factory error that occurred during the heat-stamping, this car is found with the number to the right. Which accounts for some of the variations listed below.
