The P & H Steam Shovel Car No. 6827 was produced on a BLACK 6424-11 with frame rail extensions, Die 4 car between 1960 and 1963. See No. 6820 for an illustration of the frame rail extensions.

Equipped with AAR trucks and disc couplers, the shovel was lettered "QUALITY P & H SERVICE" near the side door. The shovel came in its own box that was numbered 6827-100 and was available for separate sale in 1960.

The load for this flat car and that of the No. 6828 are very fragile. It is rare to find one of these kits that is new in the box and is undamaged. Although no complete kits have not been reproduced, some reproduction parts for this shovel are available.

Issued later during the Modern Era by MPC, these shovels are sometimes substituted for this post war version. Collectors should use caution when purchasing this car.

Issued originally with this car was a booklet titled "P & H: The Story of a Trademark" and a four page instruction sheet No. 6827-113 that Lionel did not date. There were at least two printings both with BLACK ink on WHITE paper. The first printing shows a YELLOW silhouette of the shovel on the front page and is also colored on page two. This sheet is shown below. Later printings would omit the YELLOW color. There are two variations:

Variation A: YELLOW cab for the shovel.

Variation B: DARK YELLOW cab for the shovel. A rarer variation.
