The Missile Storage Car No. 6844 was issued in 1959 and 1960, and used mold 6424-11, Die 1 and Die 4. WHITE heat stamped lettering "LIONEL" and "6844" to the left.
Six weighted missiles (No. 44-40) are mounted on pins located on the superstructure that is riveted to the chassis. These pins are often found broken from the missiles being struck by a careless hand. The superstructure has been reproduced, as have the missiles.
Equipped with early AAR trucks and disc couplers. There are three variations:
Variation A: GRAY superstructure with BLACK plastic chassis without the frame rail stops that were used for the No. 6805.
Variation B: GRAY superstructure with BLACK plastic chassis with the frame rail extensions. For more information about frame rail extensions See No. 6820.
Variation C: RED plastic chassis that has a CREAM / GRAY colored superstructure that is markedly different than Variation A and B.
Because of the rarity of the RED variation, forgeries have been created out of an unnumbered RED flat car by adding the GRAY superstructure! Prospective buyers of this variation should closely examine the color of the superstructure and the number "6844" to verify that the heat stamped is properly aligned and is burned into the plastic body.
