Lionel Trains Locomotive No. 671The S-2 Steam Turbine Type 6-8-6 Locomotive No. 671R was based on a prototype built by the Pennsylvania Railroad. This engine was deemed inefficient by this railroad and they only made one of them. However, in the "euphoria" of post-war toy train production, Lionel made thousands of them!

This version of Lionel’s S-2 locomotive headed up the "Electronic Set" from 1946 until 1949. Each of the cars in this set, including this locomotive and tender, had a radio frequency receiver on them that would allow them to be uncoupled anywhere WITHOUT the use of a UCS track section. The color of the decals on these cars determined which button to push on the No. ECU-1 Transmitter to unload or uncouple the car.

This locomotive did not have magnetraction and the No. 4671W tender has the electronic receiver located beneath the chassis. This tender was equipped with staple-end trucks with one electronic coupler that is controled by the receiver and the No. ECU-1.

Only the "671" number is rubber-stamped in SILVER on the cab. There were yearly changes to the production of the No. 671 that is reflected in this version of this locomotive. For more information about this locomotive see No. 671.

Other versions of this locomotive were produced by Lionel for both O Gauge and O27 Gauge sets, but it runs best on the larger diameter O Gauge track.

Over the four years that this engine was produced for this set (1946-1949) there would be three variations:

Variation A: Directional Unit and whistle in tender are connected by jacks to the motor that was labeled "ATOMIC MOTOR" in the locomotive. A double worm drive provides the power to the drive axles. On the front of the locomotive boiler is a RED Keystone that has GOLD lettering and on the sides it is equipped with shinny nickel rims on the drive wheels. Accompanying this locomotive is a No. 4671W tender that has WHITE rubber-stamped "LIONEL LINES" lettering on the sides, electronic receiver, and, in addition, has grab railings on the sides and the deck. The "Electronic Control" decal is located on the locomotive’s turbine housing and also on the tender. 1946 production.

Variation B: This variation is similar to Variation A except that it combines the changes that occurred in 1947 with what was previously issued in 1946. There is no e-unit slot for the control lever on the locomotive and this version is usually found with a front boiler keystone that is heat-stamped "671". 1946-47 production.

Variation C: The RED brush plate on the motor is replaced by part No. 671RM-5 which was required to keep the jack from the electronic receiver on the tender installed. The "Electronic Control" decal is moved to the flat spot on the locomotive sides above the first wheel of the trailing truck. 1947-49 production.
